A poplar tree wishes to grow many eyes so it can see farther and farther into the world. It asks the animals around it to carry away its branches one by one, each removal becoming a new eye that opens to distant landscapes. As more eyes appear, the tree believes it is finally able to witness everything it longs to see.

But when the wind arrives, followed by rain and lightning, the poplar tree is left vulnerable and exposed. In the end, only a stump remains, standing quietly in the place where the tree once grew.
